Tim Miller’s “Lay of the Land”
March 15, 2010-March 21, 2010
“Tim MIller’s Lay of the Land” is Tim Miller’s saucy, sharp-knifed look at the State of the Queer Union during a time of trial! Careening from his sexy misadventures performing in 45 States, to Marriage Equality street protests, to the electoral assaults on queer people all over the country, to his life as a grade-school flag monitor, to choking on cheap meat caught in his 10 year old gay boy’s throat, LAY OF THE LAND friskily gets at that feeling of gay folks being perpetually on trial, on the ballot, and on the menu! “Tim MIller’s Lay of the Land” is a “lay” in all kinds of ways: a sex-assignation, a queer citizenship map, and of course a narrative ballad with a recurrent refrain! (Miller’s favorite way-down-the-list definition for “lay”!)
Here’s a video “Tim Miller’s Lay of the Land”

Autobiography, animal behavior, and bald-faced lies create this poetic meditation on midlife crisis in the key of canine. After years as a self described “professional homosexual,” our heroine gives up preaching to the perverted and pestering the religious right. She takes a real job at a prestigious university, acquires a small pack of dogs, and discovers that as we age, the thin membrane that divides the animal from the human dissolves entirely.

This is a link to This American Life and explains in 1973, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) declared that homosexuality was not a disease simply by changing the 81-word definition of sexual deviance in its own reference manual. It was a change that attracted a lot of attention at the time, but the story of what led up to that change is one that we hear today, from reporter Alix Spiegel. Part one of Alix’s story details the activities of a closeted group of gay psychiatrists within the APA who met in secret and called themselves the GAYPA … and another, even more secret group of gay psychiatrists among the political echelons of the APA. Alix’s own grandfather was among these psychiatrists, and the president-elect of the APA at the time of the change.

I have to hand it to whoever came up with this one, becasue kids it is fucking brilliant! Some enterprising and creative activists in Utah have turned the bright lights of poltical theater on how disturbing the the anti-Gay rhetoric has gotten in modern US poltics and where we just might be headed if we don’t nip this bigotry in the bud.
“Patriots for a Moral Utah” held themselves a little press conference that was actually attended by all the major media outlets in Slat Lake CIty where they unvelied their effort to introduce a refendum that would offer a kind of final solution to the problem of all those pesky homos making it real hard for god fearing Utahns to rais etheir kids in an atmosphere of hatred and intolerance. Make them move! And if they don’t, well they want to set up an office that would deal with those nasty “delinquent homosexuals” and give them the boot physically. Genius!
It was all an elaobrate hoax, but one that really shows where we’re headed if we keep indulging bigotry through legislation and public referendum in theis country.

Regardless of what you think of Avatar, you can’t deny that it’s one of the most financially successful films ever made. As of today Avatar has brought in $1.3 billion dollars in sales, beating out James Cameron’s earlier hit “Titanic” in sales.
So why didn’t it sweep the Oscars like Titanic? Is it because it made a lot of money, or are there other reasons, maybe like that it has a sloppy story line?
Check out Red Letter Media’s Avatar movie review. It’s not only really funny, but also does an excellent job at explaining why the film fails in storytelling and why it has more to do with James Cameron’s psyche than anything else.
Red Letter Media is a video production company from Milwaukee that puts out regular movie reviews on mostly sci-fi hits with a very biting commentary. I’m not sure what’s going on with the guy doing the voice over commentary, but he’s really brilliant.

It’s another year at the gay Superbowl: the Oscars!
Yeah yeah Fausto.. I’m really happy for you; I’mma let you finish. But that crazy red-haired lady had one of the best Oscar speeches of all time!
Who was the woman who pulled a Kanye West at this year’s Academy Awards?
Today our friend Curtis Jensen, a gay Roger Ebert- joins us to look at this year’s winners, all the hot gay moments, and celebrity train wrecks that made the Oscars into a roller coaster of crazy.
Women dominated this year’s ceremonies as they swept the awards for best director, best picture, best actress and best supporting actress!
Sandra Bullock won the best actress Oscar, the worst actress Razzie award, showed up in person to claim them both, and hit on Meryl Streep.
Katherine Bigelow served her ex-husband James Cameron a Hurt Locker as she won the awards that might have gone to his blue baby Avatar. Anyone notice how tight Barbara Streisand held on to the statue before handing it over to Katherine? Jealous Babs?
What famous Hollywood hunks made the audience gasp with their bromantic hugs and kisses? Was Farrah Fawcett overlooked in the Hollywood’s tribute to the dead. And is Oprah going gay for Gabourey!
Plus tranny tyranny at this weekends T-PAN gala and our recap of our live show from Steamworks.

During the closing week of “Gypsy” on Broadway, Patti LuPone was heading into the climax of her song “Rose’s Turn” when the Broadway diva realized “you either have it… or you’ve had it.” And boy did she have it.
Listen as Patti LuPone stops the production, turns up the house lights and has a unruly audience member ushered out for taking photos during the show. Pretty intense.
We saw Patti LuPone and her “Evita” co-star Mandy Patinkin represent here at the Cadillac Palace in Chicago, singing some of their favorite songs from Broadway in “An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.”
If you’re a fan of these two performers or musical theater in general, it’s really great opportunity to see two of the genre’s biggest stars tearing it up and trying to string a narrative out of some classic songs from musicals.
But the glaring omission was the lack of any songs from the musical “Evita.” Both starred in the 1978 rock opera loosely based on the Argentine political leader Eva Peron. “Evita” was a breakthrough moment in Patinkin’s carreer and cemented these performers as icons.
And for many drag queens (like me) Evita has always been one of our favorite musicals starring a bad-ass diva like Lupone. So you can imagine my dissapointment when “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” was listed in the program, but never made it into the hour and a half show. I even considered breaking out my own flash camera just to upset her and unleash the beast of talent that is Patti LuPone.
This year's Oscars with a new ranking-voting system. Our friend and movie buff Curtis Jensen shares with us his insights about the awards and how the new system impacts who wins.
Plus: Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin tear up the Windy City, a woman gets an unexpected breast augmentation, death by Sauna, breath by Chocolate, Killer whale woes and a letter from listeners in San Diego looking for a little friendship.
This year’s Oscars are a little different as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is mixing it up, with a new ranked voting system where the nominees are ranked on a scale from 1 to 10.
Join us today as our friend Curtis Jensen, a self proclaimed movie buff, who sees practically every single major film that comes out, shares with us his insights about the awards and how the new system will impact who wins.
Who do you think will sweep the awards? Will Mariah Carey’s fake mustache win best actor?
Plus- we’re getting ready for our live podcast this Friday, where hundreds of our listeners join us in the flesh for our live podcast at Steamworks in Chicago. Will our Low Budget Lady Gaga number be a hit or a bad romance? Don’t forget to print out the coupon for the show and get in for $5.

In 2005, a broad coalition of labor, LGBT, and progressive activists from across the state of Illinois joined together to form “The 85% Coalition” to pressure the legislature to pass an inclusive amendment to the Illinois Human Rights Act [IHRA] to outlaw employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Illinois’ law has been a model for the nation–a sweeping and successfully implemented gender and sexuality-inclusive employment non-discrimination law.
This fall, in fact, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan testified at the federal hearings on ENDA on Capitol Hill, explaining before our law-makers that the law has been a major benefit for Illinois businesses and workers.
Charges filed with IDHR [Illinois Department of Human Rights] also show that religious institutions have not been impacted by the 2006 Amendments to IHRA. Since the effective date of the 2006 Amendments, only a handful of charges based on sexual orientation have been filed against religious institutions. In FY2009 and so far in FY2010, not a single charge based upon sexual orientation was filed against a religious institution.
Most importantly, a significant number of religious institutions were in support of the 2006 Amendments to IHDA. At the time of the passage of the 2006 Amendments, approximately 87 religious institution, organizations and leaders pledged their public support for the amendments.
However, the far right in Illinois has been irked by this LGBT victory for years, and have been looking at ways to send us back to the closet. They’re getting their chance with Senate Bill 3447 – a bill initially brought by anti-gay GOP gubernatorial candidate, Bill Brady; now championed by another homophobe, John Jones. This is part of a nation-wide strategy to reverse our rights… CHECK OUT THE REST BY CLICKING THE LINK!

Let’s face it – fighting for full federal equality for all queer people under all matters governed by law is, well, sexy as hell. Hundreds of thousands of people marched in Washington, DC last October, spearheaded by Equality Across America, and the same network has called for a series of indie-organized, grassroots and hella queer conferences based on that exact steamy concept.
The Midwest Hotties kick off the event this March 12th-14th at Columbia College Chicago, including keynotes from Staceyann Chin and Lt. Dan Choi, both very prominent LGBTQetc activists. Oh, and Adam Bouska from the NOH8 campaign is stopping by for a workshop. Have you seen the three of these people? HOT.
Top Five Reasons Why You Should Go (even if you can’t stand politics)
1. Registration = $15 dollars for the whole weekend. Yes, that’s correct. Read the schedule. To put things into perspective, the still-fabulous Creating Change conference has a $300 fee, $150 for low income. You don’t need a web service for that price comparison.
2. Feeling frisky? Well, how are you supposed to meet these activist sweeties if you aren’t there to catch them at their weakest – in a big lovey dovey queer activist conference!
3. In case you haven’t noticed, activism is cool again. Do you want to miss out on the latest trend? Proof: Equality Across America’s full list of conferences.  More proof: see below.
4. Lady Gaga marched and spoke at the National Equality March last October 11th, which jumpstarted EAA. Lady Gaga wants you to go to the conference. Her Haus even made the Video for “Teeth” about 2 kinky queens acting out a vampire fantasy. Now, pay your homage and register.
5. Even the Log Cabin Republicans are sponsoring it. When will the gay Repubs and Lady Gaga ever agree on something again?
So go get your mani-pedis, buy some new face wash or whatever gets you off, and if anything, come for the attractive folks. No liability on my part if you end up a flame throwing activist. but I will say this: Sex after a protest is by far better than any of that make up after a fight crap.
